Is hardwood flooring expensive? What are the benefits?

While hardwood flooring can have a higher upfront cost compared to other flooring options, it offers numerous advantages that make it a wise investment. Hardwood floors are timeless and incredibly durable, with proper care they can last decades. The versatility they offer is unmatched, with different wood types, stain colors, and finishes you can customize them to fit your aesthetic. If you want to update your home's style, you can refinish them which will also restore beauty and shine. Hardwoods are easy to clean and less likely to harbor allergens compared to carpets. Many hardwood options are sustainably sourced, making them an environmentally friendly choice. Additionally, hardwood flooring is highly sought after by home buyers and increases the resale value of your home. The initial cost may be higher, but it's an investment that pays off in the long run and the benefits make them a smart choice for many homeowners.

How much does it cost to sand and refinish hardwood floors?

Generally, you can expect anywhere from $4 to $8 per sq foot. There are several factors that can influence the price when refinishing hardwood floors. Total square footage is looked at, condition of the existing wood floors, as well as the layout. If the home is chopped up vs open concept, it will require more detailed handwork that takes a little more time, so that can affect cost. Whether your home is vacant or furnished makes a difference too, as moving furniture can add to costs. Additionally, your choice of stain and finish can have an impact. The contractors' expertise, equipment and experience is something else you should keep in mind. Cost-effectiveness should not be confused with quality.

Are hardwood floors a good choice if we have pets? How do we clean and maintain them?

Hardwood is a great choice for your home, yes- even with pets! They're durable, easy to clean and don't trap allergens! We're happy to provide recommendations on wood types & scratch-resistant finish that would best suit your family. Keeping pets' nails trimmed, cleaning up spills or accidents immediately, and sweeping or vacuuming routinely will help prolong the life of the floor. Mopping with a slightly damp microfiber a few times a month should be added to your routine as well. Avoid using water/vinegar, wax, soap-based products or steam cleaners. Over time they can dull the floors finish or leave a residue. Speak with your contractor- they can provide or give you recommendations on which cleaner is best for your finish type. Every 3-5 years having a maintenance coat (buff and a new coat of finish) applied will keep them looking new. You can refinish them every 10 years.

Can I stay in my house while the floors are being done? And, what about my pets?

Yes! Keep in mind- it may depend on the extent of the work being done and the type of finish being used. Usually though-there's no need to wait until you go on vacation or pay for a hotel. And, more often than not- pets are able to stay in the home! There will be times throughout the process where they will have to be off of floor, but another room or level is fine. The type of finish that is being applied will also be a factor. Our standard Bona waterborne finish is GREENGUARD Certified and is safe to use around pets, but certain finish types can produce fumes that can be harmful. It's important to speak to your contractor and see what their recommendations are, but normally it's whatever you prefer. Renovations may seem like a daunting task, but it is possible to have your floors done with minimal disruption and prioritize your comfort at the same time. Choosing a reputable company like, Heritage Hardwood, brings knowledge and experience to your project. We're committed to delivering quality craftsmanship, keeping you in the loop and making the process as seamless as can be!

How long before I can walk on them?

It varies on the type of finish that is applied, as a guideline, it's anywhere from 2-12 hours. For the standard Bona waterborne finishing system- it's 2-3 hours, and in socks only! Waterborne finish will typically cost a little more, but it has a faster drying/curing time and it's formulated to have low VOCs so there's low odor. Bona products are also GREENGUARD Certified so they are safe for use around your family and pets. Oil-based finish is a little more economical, but drying/curing times are longer. They contain more VOC's than water-based and have a stronger odor. If oil-based finish is applied, there should be no foot traffic for 48 hours. After 48 hours you can then walk on them, in socks. It's best to talk to your contractor before walking on them, moving furniture or putting any area rugs down; they can provide specifics for your finish type.

What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is made up from one solid piece of lumber all the way through. It can last a lifetime when properly maintained. As your style evolves, your hardwoods can too! They can be refinished several times. Engineered flooring can potentially be refinished, but that largely depends on the level of wear. The construction of engineered hardwood is made up of several layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard with a real hardwood veneer on top. Typically engineered flooring comes pre-finished, meaning it comes with a factory-applied stain and finish. Either option offers unique benefits, it comes down to what would work best for your day to day life and your budget
