If you've ever wondered what's the best (and, safest) way to clean your hardwood floors so you don't cause damage, you're in the right place. Here you'll find simple steps, tips and advice on how to clean your hardwood floors.

Keep in mind, it's always best to read manufacturer care instructions for the specific finish that's been applied on your wood floors however; listed suggestions are safe to follow. When using a floor pro, be sure to get their recommendations.

GENERAL CLEANING & CARE

  • DRY SWEEP AND VACUUM WITH A SOFT BRUSH ATTACHMENT, OFTEN

Over time as dirt, debris and dust accumulate, it can scratch the finish. Sweeping or vacuuming regularly will help!

  • AVOID OVER OR "WET" MOPPING- USE A SLIGHTLY DAMP MICROFIBER MOP

Excess water or liquid is hardwood's mortal enemy. It’s best when your microfiber mop pad is barely damp. You want just enough moisture to lift dirt, not “puddles”. You can always follow up with a dry microfiber pad to collect any remaining moisture.

  • AVOID VINEGAR, DISH SOAP, BLEACH OR OTHER HARSH CHEMICALS

If your floors have any build-up and you're wanting a more thorough clean, opt for a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner or a hardwood floor cleaner specifically formulated for your floor type. Using products like vinegar or dish soap can slowly eat away at your finish, leave behind a filmy residue and make the floor appear dull.

  • CLEAN UP SPILLS QUICKLY

Juice, water, wine- whatever the case may be, tackle it quickly! The longer a spill sits, the more damage it can do.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

  • IMPLEMENT A SHOE POLICY

High-heels, tap shoes, and sports cleats can all cause damage to wood floors. Putting a no-shoes policy into effect can reduce wear-and-tear significantly.

  • KEEP YOUR PETS NAILS TRIMMED

Large dogs especially, can scratch the finish easily.

  • FURNITURE PADS, DON'T DRAG- LIFT!

When moving furniture it's important to remember a few things: felt pads are your best friend and do not drag-- lift!!

  • AREA RUGS, CURTAINS OR BLINDS

You can help prolong the life of your floors by placing area rugs in high-traffic areas, and keep an eye on areas that get direct sunlight. Overtime direct sunlight can cause damage, hanging curtains &/or blinds can help to limit exposure.

Every 3-5 years consider a maintenance coat (having your floors buffed and re-coated). If your space has high-traffic, kids &/or pets, sooner might be a good idea. And, of course if the damage is severe, reach out to your local pro for a full sand and refinish consultation.

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS: While each flooring type, and finish can have individual care instructions, Bona has a great line of hardwood floor cleaners and an amazing microfiber mop system.

If you have any questions, are due for a maintenance coat or looking for a refinishing consultation- feel free to reach out, we're happy to provide any insight!
